Greetings one and all,
Last week saw my return to my old stomping ground in Stoke and deliver the half day Trauma and Change session to a range of staff from Unitas. What’s that I hear some of you mutter? Unitas is the city council’s repair and maintenance company. They carry out repairs and maintenance for more than 17,500 homes and approximately 600 public buildings across the city.
The training was commissioned by Stoke on Trent City Council through Stoke’s very own Expert Citizens Insight Academy. As you are all aware I do quite a lot of work for Insight. I do this because I absolutely love their ethos and also working alongside them is immensely rewarding. We are utilising the life stories of people with lived experience to inform and educate the various learners from across North Staffordshire.
I think initially some of the staff from Unitas were hesitant with regard to the training, ‘what’s this got to do with us?’ ‘Trauma? Eh?’ Etc. However, within a few activities the discussions were flowing and the troops were throwing themselves into the training. I heard some very insightful remarks from the staff members, especially in relation to things they had seen while out in the properties across Stoke on Trent. Rather than just focusing on customers who have experienced traumatic life events, the training also holds up a mirror to the staff and gets them to explore their own situation and background.
At the conclusion of the training, I had a line up of men wanting to shake my hand and thank me for the training. I was rather moved by some of the reactions. Especially when some of them asked how they could do more to support the people of Stoke on Trent.
