Social Worker Specific Motivational Interviewing

This week I had the absolute joy of working alongside Children and Families social workers from Staffordshire County Council.  My bespoke Motivational Interviewing (MI) ‘Inspiring Change’ course is always a hit with the troops. I love how the learners appreciate how much effort I’ve out into creating a course that reflects their roles and the issues they deal with as social workers.  The new training films were very well received with many a learner stating, ‘that’s just what I have to deal with!’ A HUGE thank you to all of my lovely actors.  All of whom have lived experience of various issues, including mental health, homelessness and social care burn out. 

One very telling piece of feedback was this:

“The previous trainer that I received MI training from made me hate it, so I was really not looking forward to today.  HOWEVER, Steven’s training has made me understand the concepts behind MI, how to use it and how good it is!  I no longer hate it and I’m going to incorporate it into my practice!!!!” 

I mean – how can you HATE Motivational Interviewing!? I do hope it was a one off ‘bad day’ from that trainer and they are not going around putting people off MI! Anyhow, I’m glad people enjoy my version, and they understand that I’ve invested a great deal of time and energy into the course.
