Monica (Heather Broadhurst) is really starting to get burnt out!

Dear readers of the blog post,

Lots of you have asked me what the course, Empathy Fatigue’, entails?  Well, fear not, I’ve attached the aim and objectives to this short blog post, along with feedback comments from lots and lots of folks who have attended the course.  I recently delivered the course (well, to be fair it was December, but don’t hold that against me!)  to an array of learners from across Stoke on Trent.  This time the course was commissioned by Expert Citizens Insight Academy, a wonderful organisation with whom I have worked very closely over the last few years.  In fact, I’m delivering training for them tomorrow.  Oh yes!

Well, here are the aim and objectives:

Aim: To equip all staff with the abilities to recognise disrespectful behaviour and challenge effectively, ensuring your organisation is a beacon of pro-social behaviour.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of the session, all learners will be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by respect and inclusive behaviour.

  • Analyse any conscious or unconscious beliefs that inform reactions.

  • Explore paradigm shifts and the way in which society reacts to change.

  • Explaine the principles of the Equality Act 2010.

  • Determine the impact of stereotyping, prejudice and labelling.

  • Describe the need to be inclusive.

  • Challenge deeply held views and looked at how to create a respectful arena in the workplace.

  • Determine how to think rationally rather than ‘reacting’ and ‘feeling.’

  • Analyse the pitfalls of communication, especially in relation to language and choice of colloquialisms.

  • Explain the need to be professional and inclusive especially when working within a team.

And here are the various feedback comments:

“Very informative, informal (which is what we need) and very good.”

“Very enjoyable day, really informative and FUN!”

“Steven was very engaging and you can learn without realising that you are learning!  In a word – excellent 😊”

“The training was totally inclusive, informative and the trainer knowledgeable.”

“Very interesting training, Steven leaves you with much to reflect on.  This was a great course that I hope will impact my colleagues as much as it did me.”

“Very self-reflective.  A really good course.  Thank you Steven.”

“An excellent course, it exceeded all of my expectations.”

“This was a very good course and you can see the work that Steven has put into it, the drawings, the films he’s made himself, the fact that he is so knowledgeable and made the course about us.  Excellent.”

“Brilliant!!!!”

“A really interesting course, a great day, I personally loved the way it was delivered. Everyone should be made to attend this!  Many thanks Steve.”

“Steven was insightful, knowledgeable, friendly and great trainer.  Thought-provoking stuff, informative and helpful.  Thanks again.”

“Excellent.  This has expanded further on my understanding of self-awareness and realise that I may be in danger of empathy fatigue or burnout.  Hopefully the team will also be aware of my hidden disability and its impact on both me and them.”

“Great content. Super engaging and informative.  Refreshing.  Pragmatic.  Realistic!”

“Great course, very engaging and interactive.  Each activity built on the last and we were allowed to gauge people’s views and perceptions.”
