Effective Recording with Birmingham CC “Who knew that factual recording could be so interesting!"

Greetings one and all,

Last week saw my return to the troops from Birmingham City Council and my Effective Factual Recording course that I have created for their housing and homelessness departments. What I would like to highlight in this short blog post is the importance of feedback. One of the learners, Shannon, gave me some constructive feedback, which I have highlighted below and from that feedback, I have made some changes to one of the tasks. Here is Shannon’s feedback:

“Things that went well: 1. Interactive – the training was engaging with the use of tasks throughout the day. Examples allowed a better sense of understanding the type of notes you should be making and were people go wrong. 2. Trainer – Steven was friendly and helpful. Did not rush through the training, made sure everyone understood tasks. Did not single people out, was not made to feel like answers were wrong and it was part of the training. Informative – strong use of real-life examples and videos gave more of an informative training. Liked how information was designed this way instead of endless amounts of PowerPoint slides.

One thing to improve on:

- I would have liked another task on note taking – maybe a roleplay with another member of the training. Overall, great training and I enjoyed the day.”

So, next week I have rectified the situation and created a task whereby rather than actually role playing, the learners talk about something from their life that they are struggling with or need to change and their partner gets to write up the conversation. It’s such a small thing and yet it never occurred to me that I could merge two tasks and make the course better. Cheers for that Shannon!

Constructive feedback is so important folks!

And here are some of the other comments.

“Excellent, really enjoyed the group discussions and the activity at the end really wrapped everything up in a neat bow. Fantastic. Thanks Stephen.”

“Very informative, well structured & engaging for all participants.”

“This is the 2nd workshop I’ve had with Steven and I believe you can make the most boring topic very desirable for everyone. You have a natural gift, please continue to educate people and broaden their understanding on topics. Thank you.”

“A very informative session and very well structured. I appreciated the interactive element of the session and the scenario-based videos/tasks as it gave us the opportunity to reflect on good practices. Thank you Stephen.”

“An excellent training course which should be made mandatory for all local authority employees. I am still amazed the examples given in tasks were real.”

“Who knew that factual recording could be so interesting. The training films were brilliant Steve, thank you for creating yet another excellent course for BCC.” “Thank you for delivering the training yesterday and I hope you are having another amazing hair day today, which was a bit of a distraction at first, the curls and colour were to die for. 😊”
