"An holistic approach to Compulsive Hoarding - exceptional training." Insight Academy Nov 2023

Greetings one and all,

I recently delivered my Compulsive Hoarding course, ‘Trapped and Drowning in My Things’ to staff from Midlands Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, or as we all know it, MPFT.

Here’s a quick comment on the course:

“I would like to thank Steven for this brilliant training session. It has been most productive, interesting and one of best courses of I have attended. It was delivered excellently and Steven was fantastic. I have learned so much from this training and it will help me with the cases I have been assigned.”

This was delivered in conjunction with Stoke on Trent’s very own Expert Citizens Insight Academy. The staff were clearly engaged and told me how much they loved the training. I even got a round of applause on the conclusion of the course. I felt like I’d stepped off stage! Lots of people have asked me what the course entails.

I have created three separate versions of the course:

1. Support worker / social worker specific in which I also look at ‘self-neglect’ under the Care Act.

2. Young people support worker specific; this session looks at how to sever the need to collect, hoard etc. especially relevant for young people who have experienced trauma and / or being a ‘looked after child.’

3. Then I have the housing officer specific version.

They each share the same aims and objectives, as you can see below. However, the training films and activities are different within each session.

Here are the aims and objectives:

Aim: To set out a successful approach to identifying and responding to hoarding behaviour, ensuring that each hoarding case can be dealt with in an effective and co-ordinated way.

Objectives: By the end of the training session, you will have:

• Described the characteristics of somebody with hoarding compulsion

• Identified how to recognise hoarding behaviour

• Demonstrated how to successfully use the clutter rating scale

• Explored ambivalence, intervention, sustain talk, procrastination and support measures

• Recognised the difficulty in discussing hoarding with customers (the elephant in the room)

• Discussed fire hazards, fire safety and safe egress

• Explored the enforcement actions available to you.
