‘Raising the Drawbridge’ Empathy Fatigue and Boundaries

Greetings one and all,

I have recently undertaken a top to toe revamp of my Empathy Fatigue course. The course now looks far more closely at identity and professional boundaries.  It is all well and good reacting to perceived empathy fatigue, but what if it is more about the lack of boundaries.  Boundaries that have been eroded by:

·         Work stress

·         Larger and larger caseloads

·         Lack of supervision

·         Trauma

·         A loss of the love for the job we used to enjoy…

Throughout the day’s training we explore what is meant by ‘empathy fatigue’ and also address how we may have lowered our boundaries.  More and more work and less and less time reflecting.  The work / life balance becomes interrupted, and we find that we are starting to lose our love of the job.  We sleepwalk into burnout.

So here is what the assembled learners had to say about the course:

“I really enjoyed the interactive elements of the training.”

“I feel I understand more about what empathy fatigue is and how to recognise the signs in myself and other people, and the difference between that and burnout. Steven helped me with understanding how to speak about it within work.”

“I feel that the course has helped me with self-awareness, feeling reassured, and more confident in employing skills to help others in my change in social work role.”

“I will look after myself better and know I am enough.”

“The training was really good; I now have the knowledge to ensure empathy fatigue does not happen in my day-to-day work and to ensure burnout also does not occur.”

“Brilliant training. This course has given me the knowledge to understand how empathy fatigue can appear in working life.”

“Steven, if it wasn’t for you and what you’ve had me reflect upon, I think I’d have jacked the job in, I really do.  Thank you. I feel ready to start again.”
