“Training with Steven is always amazing." Effective Factual Recording with BCC October 2023

Greetings one and all,
The weekend fast approaches and I have had one of the busiest and most rewarding weeks of my career so far.
Oh yes! We’ve learned, we’ve laughed, we’ve filmed and we have all been moved by the various stories from people with lived experience from across Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, Cheshire East and Birmingham.
First of all, I delivered my very popular ‘Effective Factual Recording’ course to the troops from Birmingham City Council (BCC). As we all know, BCC is going through a period of readjustment. There’s no need for me to get into the financial situation, decisions have been made and now they are dealing with the consequences. There’s been a lot said about the comings and goings at the council and many people have failed to take into account the toll this is having on the staff. Luckily, the cohort who I taught this week were:
· Highly motivated
· Engaged
· And more than anything wanting to help and support people trapped in the cycle of poor housing and homelessness.
The training now incorporated a section on empathy fatigue and burnout. A subject close to my heart and the learners took to the self-care tasks with abandon. Everyone especially enjoyed the mediation task that we took part in at the end of the day.
