Spring is sprung - and two new courses from me.

Spring is sprung! And I’ve finally gotten around to a new blog post.
Yesterday, I delivered Motivational Interviewing (MI) training to a cohort of newly qualified social workers. One of the learners said, “The other day I sat in the car and thought to myself, ‘what would Steven Talbot do?’” And that made me smile somewhat. She went on to say how much she had learned from me on other training courses and how her practice had changed due to my nudging her in the right direction. That’s the reason that I do the job that I do. I LOVE hearing what a difference my training is making to people.
Over the past few weeks, I have been a busy bee and created two brand new courses for local authorities. They both commence later this month and I’m terribly excited. I do enjoy the creative space and thinking, ‘right, how do I make this one different!?’ This has meant I’ve been interviewing and creating training films. I’ve also been laminating in my ‘best back bedroom’ and going into a Zen like state as I create the training resources. I do love interviewing the various people who inform my training. As the quote goes:
“I mostly listened with accurate empathy. There was an immediate chemistry, I loved talking to them, and they seemed to enjoy talking to me.”
Stephen R Covey
And I couldn’t agree more. I love hearing their stories and the way that they have journeyed into post traumatic growth. I often find myself wondering why some people do the jobs that they do if they don’t enjoy listening to people. Any sort of support role involves active listening and attentive listening. Being present in the moment and compassionately enquiring. If you find yourself drifting off and making a list of what you want for your tea that night, then maybe the role isn’t for you. Or maybe you just never received the correct training… Which is where I come in! Oh yes.
